A. electrical fault inside the transformer itself
Buchholz’s relay is a type of protection device that is used to protect transformers from internal faults, such as those caused by a short circuit or an oil leak. It is placed in the oil-gas duct between the transformer tank and the conservator tank.
It gives warning and protection against internal faults by detecting the accumulation of gas or oil in the duct and shutting off the transformer before damage occurs. It does not detect or protect against faults outside the transformer, such as in an outgoing feeder
