In the Indian Armed Forces, the rank of Captain is equivalent to the rank of Group Captain in the Indian Air Force and the rank of Lieutenant in the Indian Navy.
This rank is higher than the ranks of Personnel Below Officer Ranks, such as Subedar, Master Chief Petty Officer (Second Class), Warrant Officer, Naib Subedar, Chief Petty Officer, Chief Warrant Officer 2nd Class, Lieutenant Colonel, General, General of the Army, Flying Cadet, Flight Officer, Naik, Lance Havildar/Daffadar, Sergeant and Petty Officer.
The rank of Captain is preceded in rank by Cadet (the entry-level officer rank in the East India Company’s Armies) and is followed in rank by Jemadar (the most junior VCO rank). It is also preceded in precedence by Warrant Officers and followed in precedence by Provincial Police Officers.
