      Answer: Yes.

A laptop has to maintain more connections for internet than a smartphone does, so it uses up more data. However, the main usage causes the difference is that mobile hotspots are usually paid by the minute or hour, whereas wi-fi at home or in restaurants usually has free unlimited data usage.

Answer: Yes. Laptops are more power intensive than smartphones, so data usage is higher on laptops

Mobile professionals know this truth all too well – the more you do with your laptop, the more data you use. This is because laptops are always plugged into the wall and “live” at 100% utilization of their broadband connection vs. smartphones that can often just hop onto Wi-Fi to save battery life and increase data speeds. The only exception here would be if you’re using cellular signal instead of Wi-Fi (this was enabled on Verizon LTE networks last year, but is not yet available on Sprint or AT&T). Cellular networks still offer faster bandwidth than even wired internet connections…until you go over your monthly limit!
