The mile is a unit of distance that is used in almost every country on the planet. The miles of the United States are measured in kilometers, while those of Scotland and Ireland are measured in English feet. Despite the change, some countries still use the traditional units, including the nautical mile and the Italian metre. The nautical mile is a measurement that has its origin in ancient Greece. It was the unit of length used by the Romans.

In the Imperial system, the mile is equal to 1.609 kilometers. In the US, the yard is the basic unit of length and is equal to about one hundred feet. The longest imperial length unit is the league, which is 2.464 miles long. To convert a mile value to other units, multiply the number of miles by 1.609, which is the equivalent of one kilometer.
