It is important to explain your anxiety to your doctor because it is a condition which needs attention and appropriate treatment. You should be patient and explain your anxiety as much as you can. If you feel that you have not explained it well, you can talk about it again. Your doctor will do her best to treat you. In addition to telling her about the anxiety attacks, you should also tell her about any medicines which you take. This is because some medicines can make anxiety worse or even trigger anxiety attacks.
Anxiety typically manifests itself in a combination of physical and psychological symptoms. Physical symptoms often include a pounding heart, dizziness, muscle tension, nausea and sweating. Psychological symptoms often include a feeling of impending doom, irrational and overwhelming worry about events, confusion and irritability. It’s very important to tell your doctor about your mental symptoms, as it’s possible that your anxiety is a side effect of a medication you’re on or an underlying medical illness. Your doctor should do a physical exam to determine whether there is a medical reason for your symptoms. If a medical problem caused the symptoms, this should be treated in order to deal with the anxiety. It’s also worth talking to your doctor about psychological treatments such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or antidepressants.
