      What is Gaslighting mean?

The word gaslighting refers to someone trying to drive you crazy or make you doubt your reality by lying and making you believe that what happened or what you experienced didn’t happen. If something did happen, they try and confuse you with false memories about it. And they do it in such a way that it makes it hard for you to trust yourself and remember accurately.

Gaslighting is the act of manipulating someone into believing that their own memory, perception, and/or sanity are faulty. This can be done by leading someone to “confuse” the gaslighted party for what is actually happening. The term comes from play Gas Light by Patrick Hamilton which was a stage play in 1938 and a film adaptation in 1944.

There are some definite signs that someone is gaslighting you. If they constantly try to manipulate your thoughts and feelings in order to gain power over you or have power over you for their own personal agenda, they might be gaslighting you. Gaslighting can also occur with people who are not intentionally trying to control someone else’s thoughts and emotions but just trying to get what they want from the other person without regard for how the other person feels.

Gaslighting can happen in relationships where one party attempts to maintain control over the other through denial, feigning helplessness, blame shifting or simply turning reality on its head.

Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse where one person manipulates another through psychological means to make them feel as though they are losing their grip on reality. Gaslighting refers to the manipulation process of making someone question their reality in order to gain control over them.

Gaslighting can be seen as an example of emotional abuse. This type is more difficult to detect because it does not directly involve physical violence. Gaslighters may also use other methods such as verbal assault and threats against the gaslighted person or their loved ones to gain compliance with gaslighting tactics.

Gaslighted individuals often report feeling confused and paranoid about their own thoughts and feelings as well as the actions of others around them. This can eventually lead to serious mental health problems including anxiety disorders, depression, low self-esteem or self-worth issues, dissociation/dissociative identity disorder(DID), chronic sleep deprivation, PTSD symptoms like flashbacks or insomnia.
