A star-delta starter is a common type of starter used to start 3-phase induction motors.

It utilizes a two-way switch that allows the stator winding to be connected in a star while starting. This reduces the starting torque and current demand, making it an ideal option for many applications.

The voltage applied to the stator is reduced to 58% of the line voltage and the starting current is 33% of the full load current. The peak starting torque is also 33%. Star-delta starters are often used for applications where motor startup draws a high current demand.

In addition to reducing the current demand, this method also provides a more reliable start for induction motors.
