1921 is a pivotal year in Indian history, famously known as the ‘Great Divide’. This year, the British partitioned the province of Bengal, the heartland of Indian nationalism, into two parts: Assam and East Bengal (now Bangladesh). This partition led to the formation of the Swadeshi Movement, a large-scale campaign of civil disobedience and economic boycott of British goods.
The movement was spearheaded by the paper Yugantar, edited by prominent figures of India’s independence struggle. This division was a major setback for Indian nationalists, who had been demanding independence from the British. It was a major step towards the eventual withdrawal of the British from India in 1947.
