You may have heard of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, the ‘Maker of Modern India‘. He was an Indian reformer and one of the founders of the Brahmo Sabha in 1828, the precursor of the Brahmo Samaj. He was born in Radhanagar in Bengal on May 22, 1772 and he was highly respected by the stalwarts of his era. Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a great scholar and an independent thinker. He travelled to the United Kingdom as an ambassador of the Mughal Emperor in 1831, to ensure the safety of British trading interests.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy is widely credited with bringing in remarkable reforms in the 18th and 19th century India. His studies of Christian and Islamic theology helped him to understand the importance of monotheism. He also fought for women’s rights at a time when it was unheard of. He is remembered as the father of Indian Renaissance and is a symbol of modernism and progressive thought.
