The Border Security Force (BSF) was established on December 1, 1965, in the aftermath of the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War.
The sole responsibility of the BSF was to guard India’s borders against any external threat.
BSF was raised as a specialized force with 25 Battalions and over the years it has been expanded as per the nation’s requirement to fight against militancy in Punjab.
BSF is India’s primary border guarding force and a paramilitary force charged with guarding India’s land borders during peacetime and with preventing transnational crime.
BSF is a central armed police force (CAPF) functioning under the Union government and it was established following the recommendations made by the Committee of Secretaries in 1965.
