The low power factor of induction motor is due to the varying load on the power system. As the load on the power system varies, the air gap between the rotor and stator increases, resulting in increased reluctance and decreased flux, leading to the increase in magnetizing current.

This in turn results in a lower power factor operation of the induction motor. The power factor of induction motors typically ranges from 0.85-0.90 at full load to as low as 0.20 at no load. In addition to the varying load, inductive loads such as transformers and electric motors also contribute to a low power factor.
