The original name of Swami Dayanand Saraswati was Mool Shankar Tiwari. Born in 1824 in Tankara, Gujarat, to a rich family of Brahmins, his parents named him after the Dhanu Rashi and Mul Nakshatra.
He went on to become a renowned philosopher and social leader and founded the Arya Samaj movement in 1875.
His motto was “go back to the Vedas” and he wrote commentaries on the Vedas.
He was a strong advocate for social reform and against caste-based concepts.
