Heart attack is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the US. With an estimated 7 million Americans suffering from heart disease, knowing how to identify a heart attack can save your life.

In the United States, heart attack is the leading cause of death in both men and women. Approximately 700,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year, and approximately 370,000 die from them. More than 1.2 million heart attacks occur in the United Kingdom each year.

Heart attack, or myocardial infarction, is the most common cause of death worldwide. One in three people will die from one in their lifetime. Heart attacks are serious conditions that can cause death if they are not treated quickly.

    What is Heart Attack?

A heart attack happens when the heart muscle has been deprived of oxygen for too long due to a blockage in an artery or coronary artery. This leads to what we call a myocardial infarction, where blood flow through an artery is blocked causing irreparable damage. A heart attack occurs when the flow of blood to the brain is stopped or slowed, due to a blockage in one of the coronary arteries.

What Are Common Signs of Heart Attack?

The most common Signs and Symptoms of Heart Attack are:

    • Pain or discomfort in the center of the chest lasting more than a few minutes
    • Discomfort or pain in the jaw, neck, arm, or shoulder
    • Sudden, intense pain in the chest that lasts more than a few minutes
    • Tightness in the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes
    • Chest discomfort radiating to one or both arms
    • Tightness that starts in the neck and throat and then spreads to the arms and back of the neck
    • Unusually heavy or irregular breathing
    • Cold sweat
    • Dizziness or lightheadedness.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above chest pain and shortness of breath, seek immediate medical attention. This could be a sign of a heart attack.
