The unemployment rate for engineers is currently 20 – 33% in India. This number is a bit high, as not every person is looking for work. If every single engineer in India was looking for a job, then that would be an unemployment rate of 50%.

There are many engineering colleges in India and this has been the case with most countries. This large supply of graduates willing to take up any kind of work guarantees them extremely low salaries. Nowadays there are more and more engineering students coming from North America, Europe or even Australia – all due to better opportunities and pay packages over there. The engineering market in the West has become overcrowded too though – companies don’t want to hire a non-local guy who can’t speak fluent English either. I think it would be best for engineers if they looked for job opportunities outside of their home country.
