High cholesterol usually has no symptoms. Sometimes the first symptom of high cholesterol or other risk factors for heart disease may soon become a heart attack, stroke or transient ischemic attack.
The symptoms of high cholesterol can be difficult to identify. This is because high cholesterol, also known as hypercholesterolemia, usually has no symptoms.
The most common symptom of high cholesterol is chest pain or angina. This pain can be felt when your heart muscle does not receive enough blood due to the buildup of plaque on the arteries that supply oxygenated blood to the heart. Other symptoms can include difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, and feeling faint when standing up quickly.
There are many risk factors for high cholesterol such as age (the chance of developing hypercholesterolemia increases with age), being overweight or obese, being sedentary, smoking, certain medications like birth control pills and other steroids which may increase LDL (bad) cholesterol levels in the blood.
