A patch cloth is used to apply lubricant to the firearm after it has been cleaned with a gun cleaner. When choosing a type of cloth for this purpose, it should be one that fits the bore size of the firearm (e.g., .22s use a different size bore than does a 12-gauge shotgun). A piece of 100% cotton flannel also makes a good patch material because it can absorb lubricants and won’t scratch or damage metal parts during cleaning. It comes in convenient pre-cut pieces so there is no need to cut up old clothing to get what’s needed. In addition, there are commercial products available which combine cleaners, lubricants, and patches into one kit.
