Answer: HALVES.
Answer:
The plural of half is halves.
Half of an avocado, cut in two pieces. Half a bowl of ice cream, served in two parts. Half a pack of cookies…you get the idea! Notice how all the words are spelled exactly the same? That means they would be translated to different pronunciations if you were speaking another language! But not on paper.
Now, if you were to ask how many halves in a whole, that would be another matter entirely. The word “halves” is never used in the singular form; therefore, it’s incorrect to say half of an avocado or half of anything else. In those cases you would use the phrase “half of” followed by the singular version of the word you were trying to use. For example: “half of an avocado,” not “half an avocado.”
