Answer: Universal adult franchise is a democratic right that gives every eligible individual the opportunity to vote. In most democracies, this is universal suffrage – voting rights for all adults who are legally qualified as citizens.
Many countries have voting qualifications which exclude various groups from being able to vote. These country’s governments typically maintain a system of political parties, whereby each party has a different view on what should be the maximum age someone can be before they can cast a ballot in an election. Beyond themselves and their families, these adolescents will not participate in any other aspect of society – from economic policy to environmental discussion forums if they cannot participate politically either through becoming involved with advocacy groups or by casting ballots into polling booths at voting stations nationwide. Refusing democracy because they are young is absolute rubbish.
Whether or not a person can vote in the voting booth will have a significant effect on their daily lives and their futures. Politicians must take into account adolescents who cannot drive, drink alcohol, open a bank account, sign a contract without parental consent, buy a house or enter into a legally binding agreement.
