When the secondary of a current transformer is open-circuited, its iron core will become hot due to the heavy iron losses taking place in it because of the high flux density. This is because the net flux in the core is equal to the flux due to the primary current minus the flux due to the secondary current.
As a result, the magnetic saturation increases, leading to an increase in iron losses and generating heat.
This in turn will cause the insulation of the CT coil to burn due to overheating, and may even damage the transformer itself. It is important to note that leaving the secondary open circuit can have serious consequences, and should therefore be avoided.
