Answer: Performance evaluation tests will not measure “sport knowledge“.

A study was conducted on the performance assessment tests of Japanese high schools. The results show that about 90% of their value is determined by test items related to “what you have learned in class” and “skills, etc.” while it accounts for only 10% of the total score when including the portion related to the student’s ability to use words or express ideas that are not directly tested in class. Based on these results, the study doubts that this type of performance evaluation test will accurately measure “sports knowledge”.

Performance assessment tests are being used for entrance examinations in various subjects. There are two major reasons why these are being widely used. The first is that they can evaluate each student’s ability even with a short test because items in comprehensive tests cover multiple subjects unlike normal tests which only covers one subject. The second reason is that they let students who have difficulty studying be able to take an equal exam unlike normal tests where it is impossible without studying outside of school or attending private lessons at school.

However, there has been criticism against these performance assessment tests from not only teachers but also researchers and educationists saying “There is too much influence by school knowledge”. A study on the performance assessment tests of Japanese high schools was conducted to investigate the validity of these criticisms.

The study looked at data from about 10,000 students who sat for entrance exams in 2013 and compared their results with their academic grades over a six-year period before they took the entrance exam. The result showed that almost all of the weighting towards “school knowledge” is found in objective type questions which are directly related to what was learned in class while it accounts for only a tenth of a student’s ability when including subjective type questions which asks them to use words or express ideas that are not directly tested in class. This shows that although students have deficits when it comes to school subjects, there is no important correlation between the performance assessment test results and their academic grades.

The researchers say that while they understand why school administrators like these tests because it is able to accurately measure the students’ ability, there are still negative aspects about this system. One of them is that teachers will teach in a way that makes it easier for students to score points in the test which could lead to students who do not actually know or understand what they have learned to pass the exam without any problems. They also say that if this evaluation method became more widespread it would make learning at schools even more difficult than it already is.
